  • Its unique that the greeks interacted with gods and goddesses 
  • aphrodite had lovers of both gods and men
  • poseidon interfered with odysseus trying to return home
  • dionysus was son of zeus and of semele
  • zues- ruler of heaven and earth: father of athena: god of the sky, weather, thunder, lightening, law, order, and justice
  • had a temper and was known to hurl thunderbolts
  • athena- goddess of wisdom, skill, warfare, intelligence, battle strategy, and handicrafts
  • she was born from zues head fully formed and armored
  • a specail patron of heroes- such as odysseus
  • she was the patron of athens 
  • apollo- god of music, arts, knowledge, healing
  • poseidon-god of the sea rivers floods earthquakes
  • aphrodite- goddess of love, beauty, desire, sexuality
  • demeter- goddess of grain, harvest, agriculture
  • greeks were certainly a warlike people
  • spartans were known for there infantry
  • spartans boys started training at 7 
  • athens had a great infantry but nothing could compare with there navy
  • their most effective weapon was the trireme 
  • looked to science and logic for explanations of how th world worked
  • the socratic method fostered critical thinking
